Initiatives for Human Rights

Initiatives for Human Rights

The Menicon Group has established the Menicon Group Human Rights Policy, based on the International Bill of Human Rights (Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the International Covenants on Human Rights), the ILO Declaration on Fundamental Principles and Rights at Work, and the United Nations Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights, mainly to promote initiatives to respect human rights.

As part of these initiatives, we have developed human rights due diligence mechanisms and continue to implement them in order to fulfill our responsibility of respecting human rights according to the procedures detailed in the United Nations Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights.

0. What is human rights due diligence?

As demonstrated in this figure on the right, human rights due diligence is a continuous process. It includes proactively investigating and grasping the negative effects of our company on social human rights to avoid or mitigate them, correcting the situation through appropriate means, and disclosing the progress and results to external parties.

1. Investigation

We conducted interviews and questionnaire surveys at Menicon headquarters, and at 11 selected Menicon group companies with significant sales.

(Targets: Menicon Co., Ltd.; Menicon Nect Co., Ltd.; W. I. System Co., Ltd.; Itabashi Trading Co., Ltd.; Itabashi Medical (Dalian) Co., Ltd.; Menicon B.V.; SOLELKO S.p.A.; Alpha Corporation Inc.; Menicon SAS; Menicon Pharma SAS; Menicon GmbH; and Menicon Singapore Pte. Ltd.)

2. Grasping/evaluation of human rights risks

We determined the seriousness and level of occurrence probability of each human rights risk revealed by the investigation. The risks were plotted on a human rights risk map, with the two factors (the seriousness and level of occurrence probability) as the coordinate axes. We further divided these into four quadrants, as shown in the figure below, and extracted the human rights risks (event A) belonging to quadrant A (the area where both factors were at a high level).

<< Results of extraction of A events >>

  • The right to access remedy
  • Human rights issues in the supply chain
  • Information security
  • Excessive/unfair working hours
  • Industrial safety and health

3. Verification

Each human rights risk extracted as event A was verified by the Menicon group, and the Sustainability Committee determined the following response policy:

  • Continue to respond to events that have been responded to.
  • Implement measures for events that have not been responded to.
