This is a very hard challenge. Athletes hike up mountainsides, fly over glaciers and ragged peaks, in all kinds of weather conditions, and must frequently make split second decisions that can determine a day’s success or disappointment.
Only five athletes reached the goal in the last edition of the contest, X-Alps 2007. Ogi was one of them. The selection procedure is very restrictive. The preparation for the event is extremly hard. Athletes train for months before the competition, wearing an additional 15 or 20 KGs to simulate the weight of the paraglider and personal items. They train in extremes of temperature to prepare for the conditions in the Alps and must be well conditioned for climbing and descending from high mountains.
The athletes’ eyes are critically important in the competition. Athletes rely on their eyes to get an accurate view of the terrain, even when they haven’t rested so well. Athletes who wear lenses need to wear them continuously during the competition, as they have no time or hygienic conditions for taking care of them. The lenses have to work 24/7.
Having superb vision and comfortable contact lenses is essential in an X-sport because it helps reduce the athletes’ psychological fatigue.
